Projects

The three subprojects cover different climatic zones of Europe and provide, according to their source base, insight into differents parts of the respective societies. They are connected by shared research questions and focussed on the same time frame (1250-1350). Find more information on the general approach here.

Subproject 1 “Northern/Central Italy” (Martin Bauch): The cities of Bologna and Siena with their rich archival documentation on fiscal matters and discussion in the local city councils offer a deep insight into the interaction of meteorological extreme events and the adaption processes they cause with regard to policies, institutions and infrastructures between 1309-1321. Italian narrative sources provide a particularly dense picture for climatic tendencies in the framing period 1250-1350. See more here.

Subproject 2 “Central Europe” (Annabell Engel): The subproject focusses on the area of present-day Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Poland. Besides narrative sources, which are investigated for the framing period 1250-1350, administrative sources such as charters and account books, but also inscriptions, give insight into the extent and impact of the experienced meteorological extreme events during the Dantean Anomaly.

Subproject 3 “Bresse/Savoy” (Thomas Labbé): By documenting the economic and social impacts of the crisis in the region of Bresse and Savoy, and paying special attention to the relationship between climate and society, this research strives to place eastern France in the European context of the Dantean Anomaly. It is based mainly on the collection of manorial rolls of the county of Savoy. This documentation provide data about prices, yields, demography, damages on infrastructure, land transaction, etc., from the end of the XIIIth century onward. The analysis of the rolls in the window period 1300-1340 offer an opportunity to investigate how climate variability in the early fourteenth century impacted the life standards of rural communities at the local level, both in plain and mountainous locations, and what consequences the crisis of 1315–1317 have had. Subproject 4 “Middle East” (Undine Ott): The subproject focuses on the region of Egypt, Syria (Bilād al-Shām, today’s Syria, Israel/Palestine and Jordan) and the Hejaz in the 13th and 14th centuries. A large number of narrative sources have survived from this region and period. They shed light on the cimate history of the Middle East as well as on the responses of local populations, office holders and rulers to extreme weather events and the effects of climate change.
